This Course will be discussions of common Canine First Aid scenarios that the average dog owner might encounter from accidents to life threatening emergencies . There will be practical sessions including bandaging on real dogs and CPR taught and practiced on CASPER the Resuscitation Dog. This is a hands on course with the chance to practice on real dogs to give you useful skills and confidence in applying them. This course could quite literally save your dogs life !

The course will include :
Assessing a patient – A, B, C’s, pulse rates
Handling and Restraint
Hemorrhage, arterial bleeds.
Wound classification, open and closed wounds
Poisons, Symptoms, Common toxins
Shock, Hypovolaemic, Vasculogenic, Cardiogenic
Unconscious and Collapse,
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
Epilepsy, differential diagnosis, poisoning etc
Choking on foreign objects or toys
Sticks stuck in the roof of mouth, opening a dogs mouth safely, Heimlich Maneuver
Fractures, cruciate ligament injuries, growth plate injuries.
Injuries to Eyes, Ears, Nose, prolapsed eyeball.

Practical Sessions – Using REAL dogs
Locating the Femoral Artery
Calculating a Pulse Rate
Heimlich Maneuver Positioning
Bandaging fore paw
Bandaging Hind Paw
Pressure bandage of head/ears
Application of emergency Tourniquet and its dangers
CPR – two sessions on CASPER the model dog
Each pupil receives an individual First Aid Scenario that they have to read and write down what they think has happened and write what they would do. These are then read out to discuss as a group.
